Coalition Formation

چکیده
This chapter surveys a sizable and growing literature on coalition formation. We refer to theories in which one or more groups of agents (“coalitions”) deliberately get together to jointly determine withingroup actions, while interacting noncooperatively across groups. The chapter describes a variety of solution concepts, using an umbrella model that adopts an explicit real-time approach. Players band together, perhaps disband later and re-form in shifting alliances, all the while receiving payoffs at each date according to the coalition structure prevailing at the time. We use this model to nest two broad approaches to coalition formation, one based on cooperative game theory, the other based on noncooperative bargaining. Three themes that receive explicit emphasis are agent farsightedness, the description of equilibrium coalition structures, and the efficiency implications of the various theories.

Throughput-Efficient Dynamic Coalition Formation in Distributed Cognitive Radio Networks
We formulate the problem of distributed throughput-efficient sensing in cognitive radio (CR) networks as a dynamic coalition formation game based on a Markovian model. The proposed coalition formation enables the CRs to increase their achievable throughput, under the detection probability constraint, while also taking into account the overhead in sensing reports combining. The dynamic model of ...
متن کاملA Coalition Formation Framework Based on Transitive Dependence
Coalition formation in multi-agent systems (MAS) is becoming increasingly important as it increases the ability of agents to execute tasks and maximize their payoffs. Dependence relations are regarded as the foundation of coalition formation. This paper proposes a novel dependence theory namely transitive dependence theory for dynamic coalition formation in multi-agent systems. Transitive depen...
متن کاملPolitical Parties and Coalition Formation
This chapter gives a flavour of recent theoretical work on coalition formation and political parties. I survey recent work on both pre-election coalition formation and post election coalition (or government) formation. A number of alternative rationales for the formation of parties are compared with the help of some illustrative examples. JEL Classification:C71, C72, C78, D71, D72, D78
متن کاملHedonic Coalition Formation in Networks
Coalition formation is a fundamental problem in the organization of many multi-agent systems. In large populations, the formation of coalitions is often restricted by structural visibility and locality constraints under which agents can reorganize. We capture and study this aspect using a novel network-based model for dynamic locality within the popular framework of hedonic coalition formation ...
متن کاملRandom Paths to Stability in Hedonic Coalition Formation
We study the myopic stability of hedonic coalition formation. Myopic stability means that for each unstable coalition structure there exists a sequence of myopic blockings that leads to a stable coalition structure. The main result is a characterization of the hedonic coalition formation models which are myopically stable whenever a stable coalition structure exists. One interesting implication...
متن کاملMulti-agent Coalition Formation based on Clonal Selection
Coordination and cooperation of artificial autonomous agents is activity for effective problems solution. Coalition formation is by one of cooperative mechanisms used in multi-agent systems. Various approaches of multi-agent coalition formation ensure coalition stability, optimal allocation of sources and payoff distribution for efficient achievement of individual or collective goals. The paper...
